The freight train, which was operated by Southwestern Railroad, was hauling eight cars carrying iron when it derailed sometime around noon about three miles outside of Bayard near N.M. 356, about 75 miles northwest of Las Cruces. The locomotive went off the tracks and down a 40- to 50-foot (12- to 15-metre) ravine, killing all three men on board. Investigators are looking into the cause of the accident.
A few months ago, I took a trip around the Southwestern part of the United States. I stopped in many locations along the way, but my ultimate and final destination was New Mexico, Albuquerque and Santa Fe area to be exact. Albuquerque is home of 3 railroads: BNSF, Amtrak's Southwest Chief, and the New Mexico Rail Runner Express. 2 of those 3 railroads are featured here in this video. The New Mexico Rail Runner Express runs between Belen, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe. I managed to catch it in the South Valley of Albuquerque, and a few times in and around Santa Fe. Nice K5LA's on their cabcars, and friendly crews as well. BNSF maintains a small yard in Albuquerque, with some really unique and old power. Only a small handful of trains run in and out of Albuquerque, with the majority of them ru...

A rail engineer was killed near Roswell after a moving freight train collided head-on with a stationary train Tuesday morning. The accident happened between Roswell and Dexter alongside State Road 2. It happened at 6:45 a.m. as a Southwest Railways freight train carrying sand from Clovis to Carlsbad collided head-on with a parked train loaded with molasses. New Mexico State Police identified the victim as Jesse Coburn,a 48-year-old from Texico. Another train worker was flown to the hospital. Several locomotives were tossed off the tracks, some ended up on their sides and some of the freight cars smashed through the front of a locomotive. “We’re probably talking like anywhere from 10 to 20 train cars that have been derailed,so it’s going to be a long process,” said Captain Lance Bateman...

We are pacing a BNSF west bound trailer train just east of Gallup New Mexico in the beautiful scenery of the desert southwest on the ex-Santa Fe mainline. We are at speeds of up to 80 mph. The camera angle looks as if its 75, but from directly behind the wheel, it is 80. We were following this train, and very friendly crew for many miles, shooting it in many locations. If you listen while the filming, the scaner was on, and the crew calls out 80 at 0:18 to let us know. As I was driving, my good friend Kevin was doing the filming. It was April 17th, 2001

Artist: Johnny Hobo & The Freight Trains Name: New Mexico Song Album: Love Songs For The Apocalypse Lyrics: As he lights an American spirit He asks how I can smoke such shit. I say there's nothing like chain smoking G-P-C cigarettes. ‘Cuz any smokes will kill ya But these will make you feel like it! I sit back down, On the parking lot curb And remember back to February, The trip to Hartford. When five minutes ago He was passed out on the staircase! Trying to walk to his apartment But not making it all the way. And now he's driving us 100 miles an hour down the interstate Another beer in his hand Swearin' we won't be late. That was before everyone moved to New Mexico! They all left a couple of months ago. Until the day my friend When I sleep on the floor of your van again. I'll be w...
New Mexico down on Central Avenue
Where the old highway goes running through
And all that I can do ,all that I can do
Is think of you
With someone new
I got a job waiting tables in the middle of the night
See the sunrise in my rear view mirror
Wake up to see the last of its light
But I don't mind, no I don't mind
Because that hot desert sun beating down on this side
Well it ain't a pretty sight
A few old men and some young drunks they'll try to make
But I just have to look them straight in the eye
And I say please don't even ask
'Cause there's no one who, there's no one who
Can make my tired old life
Seem new and unused
I guess there's always gotta be someone out on the
Laying down all that tar
And there's always gotta be someone serving up the
Down at the bar
But I don't want to be slaving my life away
If it's just to pay for all the things I never knew
quite how to say
Dirty old blackbird landed on my window sill
I didn't want him to leave so I sat there watching him
Until he finally flew, and when he finally flew
I asked him to cut a hole in the morning sky
